Back to School Math Prep: Two Weeks of Summer Warmups

The summer slide is real, but it's also reversible. You don't need workbooks or a structured curriculum. You need 10–15 minutes a day and a little creativity. Here's a two-week plan.


Grades K-5

Week 1: Number Sense & Counting

  • Days 1–2: Count everything: steps, spoons, cars in the parking lot, blocks, sticks, even fingers.

  • Days 3–4: Play "One More, One Less." Say a number, ask what's one more and one less.

  • Days 5–7: Practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s using clapping rhythms.

Week 2: Operations & Problem Solving

  • Days 8–9: Story problems at meals. "If we have 12 grapes and you eat 4, how many are left?"

  • Days 10–11: Practice telling time and counting coins, real ones, not pictures.

  • Days 12–14: Play any board game with a number die. Rolling, counting spaces, and keeping score is math.


Grades 6–8

Week 1: Ratios, Proportions & Estimation

  • Days 1–2: Kitchen conversions. Have them double or halve a recipe. Fractions and ratios in action.

  • Days 3–4: Unit pricing at the grocery store. Challenge them to find the better deal between two different-sized boxes.

  • Days 5–7: The grocery checkout game. Have them mentally round prices and estimate the final total before the cashier rings it up.

Week 2: Integers & Data Literacy

  • Days 8–9: Sports stats or weather tracking. Compare daily temperature highs and lows using positive and negative integers.

  • Days 10–11: Visualizing data. Look up a chart online about a topic they love (video games, music) and discuss what the percentages mean.

  • Days 12–14: Budgeting a fantasy purchase. Give them a fake $100 budget to shop online, calculating discounts and sales tax.


Grades 9–12

Week 1: Algebraic Thinking & Personal Finance

  • Days 1–2: Analyze a cell phone or streaming plan. Write out the monthly cost as an algebraic expression (e.g., base cost + data overages).

  • Days 3–4: Demystify compounding interest. Use an online calculator to show how saving just $5 a week grows over 10 years.

  • Days 5–7: Calculate a restaurant tip and split the bill mentally. Move the decimal point to find 10%, 15%, and 20%.

Week 2: Probability, Statistics & Geometry

  • Days 8–9: Analyze sports or gaming odds. Discuss how a player's streaks or win rates translate to probability.

  • Days 10–11: Map out a road trip or walking route. Calculate speed, distance, and time equations to find the most efficient path.

  • Days 12–14: Real-world scale modeling. Have them measure a room and create a scaled down, 2D floor plan layout on paper.


One rule: keep it light. If your child is frustrated, stop and take a break; that may mean trying again tomorrow. The point of this warmup is to protect their confidence, not test it. You want them walking into the new year feeling like a mathematician, not like math is already hard again.
